Lily
Designed in 1899 by John Henry Dearle, the Golden Lily pattern is often celebrated as one of the most successful and recognizable designs from the Morris & Co. archives. Though frequently attributed to William Morris himself, it was actually created by his protégé Dearle three years after Morris's death, perfectly capturing the Arts and Crafts ethos. The design is a vivid celebration of an English summer garden, featuring a dense, exuberant display of lilies, bold blooms, and unfurling foliage.
What sets Golden Lily apart is its intricate layering and rhythmic grace. Deeply influenced by the millefleur style of Medieval tapestries, the pattern uses winding, curved tendrils and interlocking stems to create a rich sense of depth and vitality on the wall. The complexity of the design, which originally required twelve woodblocks to print, allows it to serve as a dramatic focal point or a sophisticated backdrop for heritage-inspired interiors. Its enduring appeal has seen it transition from Victorian homes to becoming a 1960s bohemian icon, proving its timeless versatility.
