The Serene Flow: The Willow Bough Pattern
Designed by William Morris in 1887, Willow Bough is perhaps the most instantly recognizable and enduring of all his wallpaper designs. The pattern was directly inspired by the willow trees that lined the banks of the River Thames near Morris's favorite fishing spots and his country home, Kelmscott Manor. It serves as a more naturalistic evolution of his 1874 "Willow" design, featuring gracefully curving branches and delicately intertwining leaves that capture the breezy movement of a riverside walk.
The brilliance of Willow Bough lies in its compositional mastery. Morris used sinuous, diagonal lines to mask the repeat, creating a sense of "satisfying mystery" that makes the walls appear to be covered in living, breathing foliage. Its rhythmic symmetry and botanical accuracy provide a tranquil, nature-inspired atmosphere that has remained in continuous production for over a century. Whether used as a subtle backdrop or a lush statement, this design perfectly encapsulates the Arts and Crafts ethos of bringing the beauty of the outdoors inside the home.
